Since the Chihuahua puppies are so small, leave puppies at the breeders a little longer than other breeds to let the puppies gain a little extra weight and mature a bit more. A dog that will mature at 6 pounds will weigh about 2 to 3 pounds at 10 to 12 weeks. It costs the breeder a little more to keep puppies for 10 to 12 weeks rather than the more normal 8 weeks, but the little dogs get a better start with that extra few weeks. This is especially important for the extra small dogs that mature at 4 pounds or less.

When you bring your dog home, be sure you get food as recommended by the breeder. A change of diet may cause digestive system problems. Little puppies also don't need table scraps and sweets. Upset stomach may result.

Consult your breeder about the best time to begin house breaking. Starting too early is a frustrating experience for all concerned. Often crate training works well, but closely supervise your pup when training starts. Some dogs learn very quickly to hold elimination for a certain area, but with others it takes awhile. Be patient and persistent and it probably won't take long to get the house training done. A crate can be used as a safe bed too.

Chihuahua puppies can be easily injured bu larger dogs or cats. It only takes a moment for another critter to fatally injure a Chihuahua puppy. Don't let that happen. Children also should be closely supervised with a new little puppy. Dropping a puppy can be a disaster for a little dog. And it isn't just a child that can drop a puppy, anyone can do it. So be careful with the puppy if you pick him up. For very small dogs a great danger is getting mashed by a person stepping on the dog or someone accidentally sitting on a tiny dog.

Another type training that Chihuahuas often need is barking control. Chihuahuas are terrior-like and sometimes very territorial. As a result, often they generate a lot of noise. Excessive noise gets old quickly. So you must control wild excessive barking. Many times all the barking is just from loneliness or boredom. You can very likely solve problems like that with just a little extra time for playing or exercise.

In a natural environment, your dog would stay with the parents and siblings for an extended period. By interacting with other dogs, your dog would be socialized, at least dog socialized. When dogs leave other dogs early, they miss something. It's your responsibility to make sure your dogs has a chance to be exposed to whatever social situations you expect the dog to handle. Train your dog early to deal with the world he will live in. But make sure to protect the dog from danger and scary situations.
